@wisereinn's post on Artfol

Hey! I have a question for those of you out there who also have aphantasia; how does it personally effect you and your art? If so, have you found ways to overcome/work and deal with it? For me personally I think I’m on the extreme side of it, I can’t see absolutely anything in my head (complete void) and it tends to make art really hard for me sometimes. I very rarely dream and actually see things but I never remember anything properly from those dreams. I heavily rely on references most times (which isn’t bad of course! I just wish I could picture what exactly I want) and I just feel weird I guess? I want to pursue a major in illustration, and get a job in the art world, but I feel like my aphantasia is holding me back. I always feel like I’m not a “proper artist” because of it. It’s silly thought but since I discovered aphantasia, and that I have it, I haven’t stopped thinking about it. I feel like it’s heavily taken a toll on me and sometimes it makes me feel unmotivated with art as I get frustrated with not being able to create what I want. I thought here might be a good place to take a little dive and see how other artists with it handle all of it. Any discussion is appreciated!! I’m free to have conversations about the topic or answer questions!May 1, 2021

IVE BEEN SUMMONED!
Ok- so y’know how other artist imagine what their drawing/art will look like? Well for me since I can’t see the best I can describe the way ik how the art will turn out is that there’s a description in my mind that says how it’ll look like the color, length, etc. so since I too am at a 0 on the scale (complete void too) I also use a LOT of references and that “description” in my mind
