A MOSTLY SPOILER FREE REVIEW OF THE CARAVAL TRILOGY.
(I may end up doing a full review later)
Content warnings: Mentions of abuse, possibly some alcohol consumption, descriptive kissing, but nothing too terrible. (Minor swearing as well)
Personally, I would say it is 13+
BOOK 1!
One thing I'm kinda trying to keep in mind is that this is the author's FIRST published book. So overall it isn't a bad book, but it was kinda hard to understand the world. I think the author also wasn't sure whether she was writing a mystery or romance novel, which it is kinda both.
One thing the author is really good at is writing pretty. Like she's very good at writing about of stunning aspects of Caraval.
I like Scarlett in this book, she's a good protagonist.
But Julien was 1000% best part of this book.
Donatella confuses me.
Overall rating: 3.5 stars. Because you kinda have to read the other books to understand the world a bit more.
Book 2.
I think the story starts to pick up in this sequel. Again we kinda have a mystery aspect, but it really is a bit more personal struggles.
I actually enjoyed Donatella as the main pov of this book. She was rather charming and had some good convos.
Scarlett started to annoy me.
Jacks is a 10/10 character. At first I wasn't sure whether I hated or loved him, but I think it is clear that I love him.
Overall rating: 4 stars. I was left excited and started the next book immediately (Mostly for Jacks)
Book 3.
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh. A couple of things annoyed me right at the beginning, but I'll go deeper into that in my full review... Again, I was really just wanting Jacks, which is probably why I still ended up liking this book. The mystery was interesting. But again, romance was still a huge feature, which isn't a bad thing.
I kinda wish the author talked more about the magic in the world.
Scarlett fully annoyed me.
Donatella is now my favorite sister, which I was NOT expecting to happen.
Jacks is the best.
Overall rating: 4 stars. Most questions are answered, but I think the author still left things in the air so that she could write more books.
I like this series, but I'm more excited for the following series, Once Upon a Broken Heart (which I will be reading soon)
Traits I saw through almost all of the books?
-Mystery or Romance book? The author doesn't know.
-Incredible Jacks (I love this man)
-Difficult sisters. These girls never tell the truth to each other, then get mad at each other for lying. Like be fr.
Okay, I'm tired, so review over! Bye bye! -EbieMar 5, 2025
