Superstition: Mermaids/SirensMost seafaring superstitions around mermaids consider them good luck, or that displaying one on the bow of your ship will "shame the seas to calm" because of her exposed breasts.
Me? I prefer the darker superstitions. Where a mermaid's appearance typically doomed a ship. Or when they are treated like sirens, luring foolish mariners to their death. Or, when they would drag themselves up onto a ship, it would immediately sink to the depths. What can I say? I like the darker side of myths and folklore. I think it's more fun. Plus, having worked on boats in the past, I enjoy a good "Well, here's ANOTHER thing in the sea that can kill you" tale.
Anyway, here's a drawing I did of a Mermaid as I picture them. Because, really, why would they look COMPLETELY human? Close enough is good enough to delirious sailors!Feb 1, 2021
