I gotta choose myself on this one

A million years ago (only a slight exaggeration), I went to the homecoming dance with a couple friends, but without a date. I was shy and awkward as hell, and never drew the slightest bit of attention from the girls. I was terrified to be there, and did my best to find a dark corner and hide from the world. However, this girl eventually made it a point to search me out and ask me to dance. When I say this girl, I mean THAT GIRL, the one who is drop dead gorgeous and dates the starting quarterback or whoever she pleases, while the rest of the guys in school exist in a state of perpetual envy. She absolutely was that girl, but she was also one of the sweetest people I've ever known in my life. High school is society's most rigid caste system, where the popular kids are set and the outcasts are generally screwed. I was one of the invisible kids who many in her circle probably didn't even know I attended their school. She wasn't that way though; we were never close friends but she couldn't have been nicer to me. Anyway, she and I shared a dance, with me thoroughly scared out of my mind the whole time, but that simple gesture of her knowing that I was an awkward kid out of place and trying to include me made such an impression, and then have many times since told people that that was my favorite memory from high school. Later, at our 15 year reunion, she and I were talking and I brought that up and told her how much it meant to me. She started crying and gave me a massive hug, then told her husband my name and said that was why I was one of her favorite people from school. I don't know if there's a real point to that story, except that it's none of my business why you're choosing not to go, I just hope you're not missing out.
