Hi my name's Shiy, and I'm attempting to give digital art a try. Pfp by @sapphicscribbles
Hey y'all! I'm new to arfol but I just had a question for anyone who might be willing to lend some insight.
How do you break free of the restraint "this has to make sense" when doing character designs? I feel like I can do more but I'm not sure how. Any ideas?Mar 4, 2022

think about what you particularly like and dislike about your current character designs. and look for references of other character designs that fit the vibe you’re looking for, and even think about existing characters that inspire you, make a list of you have to lol. most my character designs are inspired by my favorite fictional characters.
also, keep in mind your characters personality and their story. character design is the best way to show people what your characters like as a person. you can experiment with different hairstyles, and even body types, little details like that speak volumes about a character. and my last piece of advice is don’t be afraid to go all out, you’d rather be stuck with a complicated design than a boring one so take those risks. hope this helped :)

Jump right in and start doing some "brainstorm" sketches. Sketch out multiple small designs you have. It's kinda like thinking while you're drawing if that makes sense. Sketch out the first thing came to your mind and experiment from there. Whatever you like the best, refined the design from there. Some people don't usually go for the very first design they'd brainstorm.
You can also look up videos and references on character designs to learn more and expand your knowledge even further.
It'll take some time and practice to break the habit. There's no "perfect" time. Just do it. You can do it!
