IWD5 (TLH): Angela Hernandez Gomez
#MariadelosAngelesHernandezGomez was a Spanish bullfighter who stood out for being the first woman to obtain a bullfighter's license in Spain, for which she had to achieve the annulment of article 49 of the bullfighting Regulations that prohibited women from fighting on foot.Her passion for being a bullfighter arose at a very early age, going with her father and her five brothers to numerous bullrings, and learning the bullfighter's technique with bullfighters.
Her professional career in the world of bullfighting began with her riding a horse in numerous Spanish bullrings and some in France, turning her into a renowned bullfighter.
In 1969 she traveled to Mexico, where she made her debut as a bullfighter in the city of Monterrey, and she toured America until 1970 when she returned to Spain after receiving a severe goring to the stomach. Upon returning from her, the validity of the prohibition that prevented women from fighting made Ángela decide to undertake her particular fight to achieve equal rights in the arenas.
She made her debut in Spain as a foot bullfighter on September 15, 1974, which was followed by a winning streak.
She continued with her activity in different places in Spain, however, a set of injuries that she suffered from her forced her to retire; her reappearing in America in 1986 and in Spain in 1990.
Since the beginning of bullfighting, different women from different times and countries have faced men and beasts to win a place of honor within la fiesta brava with displays of talent and courage.
