ok so this might be the most embarrassing thing i will ever post (at least imo) but i've been thinking about this question all morning and i need to get it off my chest
is it ok to not want to refer to yourself as a yumeshipper or a selfshipper even though you would technically be considered one? i'm just asking because i tend to (but not always) ship my persona with my fictional crushes as a way to process my feelings of 'hey, i got a crush on this guy'. the reason i don't wanna refer to myself as either of the terms i mentioned is because i don't want people to think i ship myself with a fictional character; i don't. like i said before i only ship my fictional crushes with my persona. i know that a persona's supposed to represent you but still. that and i don't really think that the term yumeshipper fits me in general
i'm really sorry if this came off as weird, again i really need to get this off my chest so i'm just sorta rambling lolOct 22, 2025

this is very valid, although i consider myself a yumeshipper i can relate this feeling to many other labels. after all, labels are just made to organize people's feelings easier, but not everybody has to fit into each label the same way! so yeah i totally get it

I don't really know anything about that community or anything so idk how much my opinion is worth but I don't think you have to claim any label that you don't feel comfortable with. If the term doesn't resonate with you then don't use it, and if anyone has a problem with that then that just shows they need bigger issues in their life to worry about instead.
Plus this case specifically is something that you can literally change at any time. If you decide in two weeks you want to refer to yourself as a yumeshipper after all you can just start doing it. If you decide you don't feel comfortable with it anymore you can stop. So yeah, I know it's easier said than done but I wouldn't worry so much about it :)
I think people generally worry too much over labels and like, trying to categorize ourself, sort us into different boxes. Bottom line: what you call yourself is all up to you.

Sorry for the long response, it's a complicated topic
I had this conversation by coincidence the other day with a friend , when he brought it up and I had NO CLUE what the hell he was talking about PFFT (I live happily under a rock)
I think it's one of those things where you just have to be careful what group you talk about it in, since it's super easy to misunderstand or find weird as an outsider. Not everyone understand that a persona often functions more like a personal mascot than a true-to-life self-insert. And it's also a topic that can be so personal that how people do it is gonna vary, making it tricky to relate to.
All that aside, I think it's generally healthier to own terminology than run from it. Know your stance in it but own it. Else it's gonna be a topic of shame or embarrassment, which is sad when there are art communities around it. It doesn't have to be the single defining thing about you unless you want it to be. Your issue stems from not identifying with the terms, which is a can of worms. Is it because the words themselves feel weird to you or because you dont relate to the communities you've experienced?
To compare:
I'm in a queer relationship with my boyfriend, but I don't relate to a lot of the cultures (and stereotypes) associated with the gay lifestyle. That however doesn't change the matter of our relationship, and at a certain point, what people associate with identity, isn't actually an identity, but a technical descriptor. Not liking some things related to it, or feeling singled out, etc, does not change the "technically I am" aspect.
But like, this is a non-problematic issue. I don't think anyone is gonna be mad at you; I'd just be concerned you're making yourself embarrassed over nothing by not wanting to associate with something fairly harmless.
