Use references, and note where there are "cast" shadows (more sharp outlines) and "diffused" shadows (blurred outlines). Not all shadows are smooth. Tbf, I discovered that you shouldn't blend much at all unless you are doing some kind of ombre effect and the color transition is seamless. Most of the time, colors from light to shade shouldn't seamlessly change or the eye has trouble visualizing it as anything but a flat object with an ombre base. Hope this is helpful!
