I believe mutual has to come from both sides, without the feeling of having to be mutual just because everyone else is doing it, or trend.

Like others have said, a mutual is when you and another person follow each other. My personal definition of a mutual goes beyond that -- I only consider someone a mutual if they interact with me and/or my posts often, and I return the gesture at the same time

yea a mutual is someone you follow who follows you back. some mutuals interact with you and some just kinda linger in the background.
