L'Amour et Liliana, Petites - 20240212
It's the month of love, February, and my creative juices were flowing once again to create another digital masterpiece. As an artist, I find solace in expressing my deepest emotions through artwork, and this time, I wanted to capture the essence of my ideal romantic love. I wanted to create a piece that would evoke a sense of passion, intimacy, and vulnerability. So, I delved into the realm of my imagination and brought to life my beloved characters, Arlon and Liliana, through a nude artwork. The absence of clothing allowed me to focus solely on the raw emotions and vulnerability between them, creating a sense of intimacy that words could never fully capture. In this particular piece, I portrayed Arlon and Liliana as Cupid and Psyche, the mythical mascots of Valentine's Day. Inspired by the beautiful painting of William Adolphe Bouguereau, I decided to depict the young couple younger, just as the mainstream media often portrays Cupid and Psyche. The innocence and purity radiated from Bouguereau's art spoke to me, and I sought to channel that same enchanting aura into my creation. By portraying Arlon and Liliana as mythical characters, I aimed to emphasise their untainted love and the purity of their connection. The choice to depict them like that also allowed me to explore the idea of love being timeless and eternal, transcending age and societal expectations.
As the masterpieces of Bouguereau depicted, the innocently naked Arlon and Liliana were younger than how I usually portrayed them. However, I wanted them to exude a certain charm that was slightly older than the Cupid and Psyche in the reference artwork. With delicate strokes, I painted Arlon hugging Liliana tightly, while he kissed her cheek sweetly. The tenderness and affection they shared in that moment were palpable, as Liliana embraced Arlon, mirroring the love they embodied. Their embrace seemed to defy the passage of time, as if their love had been forged in another era and carried through the ages. The way they held each other spoke volumes about the depth of their connection, a bond that transcended physical appearances and societal expectations.
I knew that this particular artwork might raise eyebrows for some due to its subject matter. However, I anticipated such reactions and had my ways to combat them. One of my defences was to emphasise the symbolism of wings. In my rendition, I adorned the young couple with wings, similar to the reference artwork. This subtle addition served as a statement, highlighting that it's natural for baby angels to be depicted in a state of what it must called which is "innocent nudity". To those who might question the portrayal, my response would be simple yet firm, "Ask William Adolphe Bouguereau instead, for he is the one who initially featured it. I'm merely referencing his work."
It was important to me that people understood the distinction between these baby angels and the commonly mistaken term "cherubs." Cherubs boast four wings and four heads, an entirely different entity altogether. The figures present in my artwork were undoubtedly rooted in Greek mythology, inspired by Cupid and Psyche, with their ethereal beauty and heartfelt connection. The portrayal of nudity in my artwork is not meant to be provocative or controversial, but rather a celebration of the human form and its inherent beauty. Art has the power to transcend societal norms and challenge our perceptions, and I wanted to capture that essence in my work.
In conclusion, as an artist, I strive to evoke emotions and spark conversations through my creations. This particular digital artwork featuring my beloved characters, Arlon and Liliana, as Cupid and Psyche, was my way of celebrating the month of love. Inspired by the captivating works of William Adolphe Bouguereau, I aimed to capture the innocence and purity of love through their tender embrace and sweet gesture. While aware that this artwork might invite questions and doubts, I stood by my decision and defended it with the historical reference from which it stemmed. Let this be a reminder that art holds different meanings for different individuals and serves as a vessel for exploring and expressing the depths of our souls.Feb 12, 2024
