Hello! I need people to answer this for me.
I'm doing a ted talk at school about AI art so I have a couple of questions. It would be epic if you all could answer them!
1. Do you support AI or not? Why?
2. Do you use AI art? Why? What do you use it for?
3. Is AI morally correct? Why or why not?
I'm not here to argue about it, and we may have different opinions on it. I am an artist so my views on AI Art aren't as positive. I need a vast majority of answers though, see what people of all age groups think.May 15, 2024

Oo I have an interesting take on this. So for an unnamed universal studios ride that’s in development, I know some of the people were toying with ai. Mostly just to use as a starting ground to help them generate ideas, like you’d do with looking at photos or visual libraries. They would then throw the ai stuff out and use the ideas they brainstormed to work on their own stuff.
At least they did until some executive started panicking because they thought ai would infringe their copyright or something? I dunno, but it’s banned completely for universal now.
Ai is super tricky In that it could’ve been used so well, but it wasn’t. Imagine a world where ai was designed for artists by artists. You know how tedious coloring in animations is? Well what if you could tell ai to do that for you and have more time to work on the actual animating.
Unfortunately it obviously wasn’t ethically sourced, but the good news is I don’t think ai will replace most peoples jobs anymore. After looking into it and experimenting with it myself- it kinda sucks lol. If you want some generic cheap slop that looks passable without further examination, then it does the trick. If you have specific instructions for a project, ai won’t do shit. The only jobs that will be replaced are for stuff like shitty mobile games or any other project that was devoid of any artistic intent to begin with.
The direction ai has been taken is kinda sad because artists were some of the first adopters, generating weird ideas with dalle mini and redrawing them was fun! But then some jackass entered their art in a competition and it was all downhill from there.

2. For art, no, but random cute pony photos and writing, yes. It's mostly because my school has its own AI.

1. If it’s art AI specifically, then absolutely not. You’re literally taking the meaning and soul of creating art.
2. I did on it’s beginnings when the pictures looked awful with my sisters, we were bored and curious so we created images for sh*ts and giggles.
Also tried an AI Pokémon generator, I had artblock then and decided to redraw a few of them giving more logical sense (some of them were just blobs). I never posted them online due to unwanted AI drama, but I still have the original images and drawings saved on my PC. Feel free to ask me to saw them to you, if you need examples maybe (?).
3. The machine doesn’t have any morals, it just follows orders since it was programmed to follow them.
However humans do (or not) by using it for their own purposes. Personally I see it as a “tool” for inspiration (ex: color palettes, composition, character design, etc), AS LONG AS it isn’t the final product.
The problem is that the big majority who support/mostly use IA are big companies, art thefts and crypto bros to spend less money by not paying a real artist, because it’s the “best” answer economically without making any modifications to the image. As they say “Better quantity than quality”

Just assuming this is only about AI art and not other forms of AI, then no, I do not support it at all, it's based off theft and it's absolutely terrible for the environment. 1 prompt, not session, just one single prompt is the equivalent of wasting a 16oz of clean drinkable water. The data centres that run generative AI use ridiculously massive amount of energy (enough to power a small country!) and require immense cooling, we are currently in a climate crisis and many places are struggling with blackouts and inability to produce clean energy, yet we have these data centres which are putting huge strain on already scarce resources and damaging the environment. I could go on, there is plenty of evidence available (just don't use Google to look for it, their AI will most probably lie to you XD ) The way AI is being used for chatbots and art is wasteful and unnecessary, there are genuine uses for AI but making art is not one of them.

1) i think AI could be and is used in ways that 100% make people's lives better, including creators. A good example of this is how the animators of Spider-Verse trained an AI to do certain laborious grunt work in animation like in-betweens and certain effects so they could focus on the creative parts. This however, isn't "generative" AI. GenAI is where I draw a hard line. I don't think GenAI has a place in the creative world at all. Ethically and spiritually, it takes the human out of the creativity. Even trained on stuff with permission, I wouldn't use it for anything.

1 - No, I don't support it. Having a generative algorithm for pictures fed on specific samples fine. Or having one able to “recognize“ pictures properly absolutely. But not the currentmostly art theft based models. That's not cool, especially since unlike with collages and assemblages or ready mades in traditional art which basically also only re mash other‘s stuff or even basic photo bashing ai art doesn't make the original apparent by the medium, the stuff used and how it's put together nor does it make the art thing about it the way it's put together or the new context it's put in.
Ai wants the viewer to think it's drawn or painted not making the deception the artsy thing about it but just claiming “I did that“.

So I wouldn't say there is a correct way but I would say it's not really good either.

1. Comp sci student here, I'm gonna assume you mean AI in art. AI in general is cool! AI in art is not only plagiaristic but defeats the point of art in the first place. It's saddening to see it used commercially. It's not art.

1. No, artists of all kinds spend a veerryy long time getting their work done, making sure it's accurate and enjoyable to everybody so having an some ai recreate that in a matter of seconds is such a slap in the face

Going back to what I said for question one, It really puts down the people who make creative pieces and/or steals from that person's hard work that they coul hours on AND is taking away people's income Everybody wants to complain that machines is taking over the workforce yet I feel like Ai art isn't getting as much recognition for taking over artist's jobs

I agree with everyone else (as of reading this)
But I just wanted to add that I feel things like ai can really stunt creativity
One thing that I learned from art lessons is to use your surroundings and I love that
Art, film, music, etc all have influence from the world the artists live in
And training yourself to use your surroundings as inspiration can really help you and your creativity I feel
A computer doesn't expérience the outside world, it can never grow up and have influence from what situation it lives in
I just personally think ai kinda skips, what I think, is one of the best things about artists, creativity!!

Why? Well, the answer for all of these questions is the way it was first implemented and how it mainly appeals to people furthest from art (greedy corporations and crypto/tech bros). Every single art piece that’s been used in its training was stolen, nobody in that process actually cares about artists and doesn’t try to market it as a helpful tool. It is marketed as ‘replacement’ instead. If it was trained with consent in the first place, then people wouldn’t have has that big of an issue with it. But as it is, AI art is plain harmful and insulting to artists and poses a threat to some people’s employment. It needs to be regulated asap

Im a professional artist. I dont support the use of AI generated artwork, because it is trained on the cumulated copyrighted work of every artist ever in order to replace them. I do not use AI art at all because it feels disingenuous to benefit off of something that is putting me and my peers out of work. Is like hastening my own redundancy. Ai art is not morally correct in its current form. If it was possible to train an AI on art that was legally obtained and usable it would be in a moral gray area as it would still be a tool used to mass produce lower quality versions of something in order to replace human art and work, however it wouldn't be morally wrong, just sad in my opinion. It isn't possible to create an AI without theft from artists however so that hypothetical where it isn't technically morally wrong is very fantastical.
