I was inspired by 'Animal I Have Become' by Three Days Grace & this horror manga I read recently called Shiga Hime. Here's a bit of Axel lore, as a treat
Axel wasn't always a homicidal maniac. Long story short, he performed a tabboo spell that removed his physical heart, making him immortal. He keeps his heart somewhere safe & can't be killed unless someone finds & destroys it OR puts it back into his body. The spell is dangerous bc the transformation when you get your heart back is apparently so painful that it's more likely to kill than restore you.
Everyone believes that he did the deed so that he could exact his revenge on the demoness that betrayed him. But deep down, Axel just wanted to numb himself in the worst way possible bc he couldn't deal with the pain of losing his entire family. The change was gradual. After a day or two, his chest wound didn't even ache. Then he could no longer taste regular food & all he started craving for was blood & raw meat - the fresher the better. Though his species of mythos were cannibals, they were never cold-blooded. They didn't hunt for sport or took joy in killing others, but Axel had become something else entirely. And by the time he realized it, he was too far gone.
We'd all like to believe that the old Axel is somewhere in there, still fighting for control. Or maybe he's hoping someone could just end their existence so he didn't have to struggle anymore. Either way, he's Samhain's problem now.Aug 2, 2021
