Okay, let me jump in here, since I have a lot of experience with Twitter! It can be a bit of a hassle to understand the Plattform sometimes. Here are some things you need to understand: first off, Twitter doesn’t crop images anymore since October or November (don’t remember the exact date), so you don’t need to worry about that anymore!
Next up is post times: it matters. But it’s inconsistent! You have to test around and see what works for you, since it depends highly on where your followers are from (I’m German, but most of my followers are from overseas, so posts I make late at night perform well for me).
The biggest thing is community building. I started on Twitter in 2018 by posting fanart and character art of World of Warcraft, but when that died down I switched to Final Fantasy XIV, both games have engaged communities. This is where it can get a bit messy though: if I post Final Fantasy content it performs really well, but other content does not. It’s because people start following you for a specific reason, and then they want more of THAT, since that is what they signed up for!
It depends on what you want to do of course. If you want to do mainly original content growth can be slower, unless your work is outstanding beyond reason - outstanding content always performs well.
The best advise I can give you is to be very active. Post comments under content you enjoy a lot, retweet art you enjoy. Participate in draw this in your style challenges of artists you like, or other public challenges, if you want to get noticed. And be aware it takes time. Getting your first 5k followers on Twitter can take 1-2 years easily, but you don’t have as much community interaction like on Twitter anywhere else!
