@sofnas's post on Artfol

Here's something I'd really like to know... How many of you are studying an art career? Or are you planning to work on something else and keep art as your hobby/second job? Or... are you doing any of those two options already??

Ngl I had a tiny existencial crisis this morning and started crying like a baby cause I don't really know what I'm doing anymore, so reading about everyone's experiences or plans for the future would be a big help!

As I have always been interested in art, I did spend a long time deciding between art or engineering as I liked both. I ultimately decided to keep art as a hobby, but hopefully I can develop my skills and I can use it in my career as well. But for now, I just draw for fun haha
No estes triste sofi tqm.
I got a degree in game art and it made me realize doing art professionally would probably kill me lol so now the plan is to become a mortician and keeping making whatever art i want
I'm currently studying illustration, and wanna work as a tattoo artist in the future. I also like the idea of drawing album covers, designing merch and stuff like that. So I am very excited to have art as my full time job in the future, it's just gonna take hella time and effort to get there.
I'm currently working as an animator, but... my friends and I have reached an odd point in our lives debating if we still want to be professional animators? I think we're all in mutual agreement that we are all very passionate about our crafts, but the type of paid work we've filled our wallets with haven't been nearly as fulfilling as we would have liked. We still have our ambitions though, but still just as equally inexperienced, I think. I know some of my buds plan to find a more stable job next year--which I want to iterate is by no means a step down from your dreams. It's hard to take responsibility and prioritize survival over living the dream, but it's a wise strategy nonetheless.
I still draw in my free time, but I think I've reached that part of my creative relationship of wishing I had that perfect balance of enjoying what I do and getting fully compensated for it. Actually debating on going back to school or taking an online course to pick up some practical skills, and setting up a patreon or something to support my creative side.
Sorry if I talked too much in the end 😅 But really, point is-- there is zero shame in taking a step back from what you want to do. It's 100% if you feel unsure about your interests and where you wanna go next. Also: it helps a lot to connect and network with others! Ask your peers, your friends, your teachers, and your most trusted sources. Seek guidance from a professional. Stick together. That's legit how I got around.
hey! Yea I've been there... I'm not sure how well my personal experience would help as I hate being forced to make art so I kind of knew I couldn't pursue it as a career. I still loved making things so I'm currently majoring in computer science.
But I am making quite a point to limit any extracurriculars so that I can have time to plan out my own characters and story lines. (I want to make a webtoon + I already upload fics and what not on ao3 and the like to practice writing)

Who knows, if a story of mine becomes popular enough I might make the switch, but I just didn't want to hinge day to day work on my art. I always felt the stress of it alone would destroy my passion and creativity.
im only keeping it as a hobby, would be nice to be a concept artist tho. I just wanna work on anything game related for my future job
Currently, I'm just keeping art as a hobby/"pocket change" kind of income. I don't want to depend on it too much and come to dislike art, but it's nice to get paid a bit for my work since people are interested and all.

My little tid-bit (you don't have to take ANY of this, just throwing it out): It's okay to take a step back and just do basic stuff, worry about hobbies and big school decisions when the easy stuff is settled. Even if you just get a part-time job, or a break from school for a year, or time to just really chill out!
right now i work at a food job, but… my ultimate dream is to work as an artist in the entertainment industry! i’m not in school for it rn though. not sure what my current plan is either…
Oh no!! Sad Sofi!! Initiate Protocol H.U.G. immediately!!
I’ve only done art as a hobby. I went to school for IT because my priority at the time was to move out of my parents’ house, so I wanted a stable job with alright pay :P I didn’t want to move out of state so getting a job as an artist wasn’t feasible. Now, I’ve been back and forth on doing more with art, but I’m afraid that making it my job would suck the joy out of it, so I’m just kinda keeping an eye out for interesting opportunities
i wanna be a wedding videographer believe it or not! or do filmmaking in general as a freelancer. also take care of yourself pls ;-;
My goal is to make a job out of it yeah, so I gotta work hard to make up for lost time!! :3
I'm almost finished in my food engineering studies. For the moment I'm keeping art as a hobby but if someday I want to change because I hate my job in the food industry maybe then I'll start doing art for a living
Art commissions have been my only job for the last few years. I originally wanted an art career but didn't think it was realistic, but thanks to the pandemic + my own health issues it ended up being the only option I had.
