Nothing is truly original. Whether you draw fanart or a tree, you’re deriving from something you didn’t create. Everything you’ve seen influences your designs, consciously or subconsciously.
Using references is normal and no different than drawing portraits or still life, which are closer to the original than drawings using photos or other art as reference.
You cannot own a pose. If so, no one could draw anymore as they’d be all used up by now.
Sewers use patterns, cooks use recipes... artists use references. Professional artists use references.
Not only should artists use references more, but other artists need to be less like gatekeepers who forbid other artists from learning from their art. We should be helping each other out, not preventing each other from growing as artists.Aug 18, 2022
