I’ve heard it was originally given as a punishment, but I’m not sure if that’s true or just a myth.
It’s probably supposed to be so you remember the material, but it often causes way more problems than it’s worth.

I think the original concept is to help students understand the material more and have the freedom to make mistakes before the real exam starts, but that purpose is long gone now :v now it's basically one of their ways to try and convince u that u'll live in the streets for life if u can't solve the equation :"
