I'm in love with the colorful background too 
As for rendering, maybe for the shading I'd try using various colors and not just a darker version of the original color to add more depth and interest ! Also maybe you could try adding some shading and lighting to the eyes too instead of leaving them with a flat color (except if that's what you want, I do like the flat color eyes look a lot, a bunch of my drawings have that

•A tip I have for you is try shading with more light peachy pinks and light purples (you add purples last to the skin shading or at least how I do it) !! I learned this hack myself and I’ve always used it in my shading pieces. It adds more depth and color to the person. ^^
You can also start adding strands to how you draw hair and add very light highlights too!!
