All of those. I do give out exact prices - I give out a base price, but that can go up depending of the complexity of the commission. Promotion and connections are also important.

•I know this gonna sound unpopular but I usually approach people and provide free commissions. The main reason for this is so I can have a grasp of how certain commissions should be done and have a examples for a new commissions sheet (e.g. book cover commission sheet) but also they can some of the advertising for me when the post said commission on their profiles :)
Also word of mouth is pretty good too. I shared some artwork I did with my uncle and he shared it with some of his friends and acquaintances he knew. I managed to land an extremely big commission because of that.
