I remember when I was younger my sister was talking to me about how "once you accept the anime in your art style, your art will start to improve" and only then had I realized how much I wanted to stray from drawing anime solely because other classmates/friends only saw my drawings as "anime" and would sometimes make fun of me for it. And I only just started getting out of that "anime bad, stop drawing big eyes" mind set when drawing. Because of that I noticed how much my art improved because I wasn't restricting myself. SO, if you're suppressing the anime in your style

God I remember not wanting all of my stuff to have them big anime eyes, so the solution was to make the eyes in subsequent pieces real small. This only made those pieces uglier in the process.
