Window Cut-Out Trousers

These are the Window Cut-Out trousers from my Empty Pride collection, partly constructed.

I considered for a while how to create the cut-out and attach the mesh insert. If I just cut it with any kind of blade it would rely on my dubious cutting skills and be liable to fray if I left the edge raw, so I got to try out the laser-cutter for the first time! The laser-cutting was incredibly precise, and it meant if I used synthetic fabric it would melt the edge and seal it. So I got my hands on a 100% polyester twill (I would’ve preferred more of a denim in hindsight, but you know how it is) and a contrasting white mesh.

I also tried using an embroidery machine to attach the insert, which turned out to be super tricky to calibrate on the fabric, so for the final version I used an iron-on sheet to hold it in place before sewing around the edge on a regular lockstitch machine. It turned out neater than expected and the stitching blended perfectly into the fabric!Apr 22, 2022
