So odd thing. I was more excited for the new Willow series than I was for the Lord of the Rings.
Why?
When I was around 10 my parents took me and my little sister to see my Grandparents for the Holidays in Las Vegas. (This was a common thing we did growing up.) During our stay at our grandparents house our mom took us to Blockbuster. Oh the good old days. We picked out some VHS's and one of them was Willow. Everyone. That movie changed my life. I was hooked on that 80's fantasy goodness with the scary stop motion monsters and the trolls, which were men in a troll suit and you could see the soles of their shoes under their feet.
Not long after we eventually BOUGHT the VHS. The movie was quotable, funny, adventurous with swashbuckling, a very expressive baby, magic, romance, a wonderful soundtrack, and a scene of people transforming into pigs that still disturbs me to this day.
A year or two later, Lord of the Rings was released in theaters. I saw every movie on the big screen, had the extended editions DVD and had marathons and sleepovers with friends evolving around this movie. I read all the books, the Hobbit included, and centered my reports around it. Enya and Sir James Galway were worshiped in my household. My family in New Zealand took pride in this film. Lord of the Rings shaped me who I was today.
But when I heard about the new series for LOTR, I don't know, I just wasn't extatic. Maybe I had enough. Or maybe the magic died when the Hobbit came out and CGI mostly took over. The original films were made with love. And I didn't see that same love as with the Hobbit films. LOTR was ahead of it's time while still using amazing film illusions and orc makeup.
But Willow was special in its own way. It's an oldie but a goodie. Every time I wanted to watch a heartwarming fantasy, Willow is was always my first choice. I never thought or imagined some one would revisit the Willow Universe. And that is what made it exciting. I watched the first two episodes already. Sure there was some CGI and is obviously made for modern and an older teen audience, but I'll tell you what, those death dogs are still terrifying and one of the new villains that kidnapped one of the characters actually made say "No thank you." And everytime they show a montage with shots from the old film, I teared up.
