Angry Tears
Wild Cows were gunned down the Gila National Forest a few months ago, here in my state of New Mexico.I was looking for "feral cow" videos while painting this when I stumbled upon the story being covered by a local news station.
Wild horses are a thing in my state without issue; I was curious to hear about similar situations with cows. Unfortunately, their presence in the forest was impacting endangered species around waterways. These cows were gunned down while people were trying to organize to find a better way to deal with the issue. While it was obvious the cows needed to be moved or dealt with, there was a question as to how best to deal with the situation. A month later from the original news video saying the killing was on hold, a follow up was posted (now 2 months ago).
The cows were shot down and fed on by wolves. At least one of the cows fell into and contaminated a water way. In an effort to preserve our environment, the "solution" still did damage, just in a different way.
How sad for a wild animal to not have a place to just be a wild animal. These cows escaped domesticity once, and it just breaks my heart this was their end. I don't know what another solution may have been, but this just doesn't sit right with me.May 21, 2022
