Why is my English professor calling Native Americans "Indian Americans."

What??? In Elementary school, I was taught that they were just “Indians,” which I thankfully was able to easily correct myself when I was older to seeing them as Native Americans (because they’re native to America, it just makes sense?)
I wonder if he’s mixing up his words or has simply went this long without being corrected???

It’s probably because when Columbus  discovered America he thought it was India, still stupid tho it bothers me so much when people do that

•A lot of people grew up with that wording and never modernised...... I once had to explain to a coworker who was only a few years older than me that saying "red Indian" was EXTREMELY offensive
