Drawing people you know irl can be such a slippery slope. Like, what if you accidentally emphasize features that they don't like about themselves? Like big noses, wide smiles, squinty eyes, etc.
You're basically saying "this is what you look like through my eyes" and if your vision of them doesn't align with how they see themselves, it might come off as offensive.
Do you guys get anxious over this when drawing someone you know? ( ;∀;)Jun 18, 2021

This has been a problem through out art history too with famous artists enjoying certain aspects of peoples faces that the client does not like. Lots of fights ensue, some are fixed and even torturously twisted to hide things while I’m sure many also realize that it isn’t a weakness, or they have a big ol fight and stop talking to the artist.
I feel like it isn’t as big of a deal as we make it though? If something comes up in the sketch and they say they don’t like that feature about themselves, and if you tell them its actually a beautiful feature of them, but they still don’t want it? No problem, you can change it. You should not however be silenced or afraid to push boundaries, I feel like we have gone too scared of voicing ourselves these days.

•Drawing caricatures is like a loophole though. When drawing a cartoon version of someone, the person knows that all features or most of them will be dramatic to some degree. Hopefully, though, they have a good sense of humor and appreciate art!

Yes very much so xD that’s why I haven’t yet
but I kinda want to cuz I think my friends are beautiful

•I find that if I just make the hair similar, its enough XD
or I just cover their face and say "this is you"

•One time one of my bff's sent me a picture of her and asked if I could draw her and I was like "yeah, sure!"
I tried to make the drawing as realistic as I could and was proud over how it turned out, but when I sent it to her she complained about how she looked fat ಥ_ಥ

•Also drawing my non-binary friends is so stressful cause I’m worried I’ll emphasize features that they’re not comfortable with or that don’t match up with the way they want to present themselves

•DUDE THAT IS SUCHHHH A HUGE MOOD

I feel exactly the same way!!! Especially cause my style is very “round” people always complain that I draw them as overweight ahhh
