I joined a TMNT fan zine recently and that was a fun experience 
It was run by a young group of fans and it was a casual project that we only distributed for free online, but they were very organized with a discord for the project and everything. It was fun since everyone was doing it because they wanted to and were fans of the franchise :)
I was rejected by a few zines before for not having the art style they wanted, so it’s not always just skill they judge on. I would say, it’s only worth applying if A) the people running it appear fairly organized and professional, and B) you’re passionate about the zine’s topic. In many cases, you’re more likely to get selected if you already have work in your portfolio of a similar theme.

Zines are meant to be small print books for fun. Not whatever is going on there.

The experience was it sucks bc 99% of them are unprofessional teens/early 20 year olds doing a thing. I ended up dropping out of a lot of too much work expectations, disorganization and art clashing. Most want the top of the top artists but want to give them nothing for their time. Organizers are beyond picky for the wrong reasons. Expect to be rejected a ton of times. It has nothing to do wiyh your art skills but personal taste to the organizer. Ive been in like 5 after applying to like 50 rejections. And hated them all will never do it again. I think itd probably be more fun to make your own or go with foljs youre already comfortable with. Like specifically your art friends or people with a solid zine track record.
