Art school application 1/3

people wanted to see what i submitted for my fashion/costume school acceptance so heres the first out of my three things

this was made 4 months ago, so its kind of already not that great, and i also wasn’t allowed to do digital art so i had to rough it out with color pencil

the prompt was to do two costumes based off a musical production and i chose k-12 by melanie martinez! (the third drawing is supposed to be a fashion drawing)
one of the first lines of the movie, “off to a world where girls are to wear pink dresses, and boys, blue pants,” really stuck out to me, so i knew that i had to do one costume with something like a pink dress and something like blue pants. the main character in k-12 expresses feelings of feeling trapped and suffocated, hence the cage (the plot is also that she’s literally trapped in a crazy school). the chest cutout signifies her sensitivity and the bows and frills represent her emotional complexity. the droopy bows have another meaning though. traditionally, bows are thought of as perky and perfect, but since the character isn’t necessarily perky or perfect, theyre a bit sad.

the costume as a whole and hair goes with the european aesthetic sometimes shown in the movie, and forgive me if im historically innacurate, which i am 99% sure i am aha
