Their father had a plan... a pretty solid life plan! 1 son, 1 good career path, both him and his wife working to make a very stable income, and that was pretty much the fundamentals... BUT- Adrian came to be.
And not only that, the mother started falling sick more often, therefore she worked less. So for a while she just stayed home with the kids until doctors found better cures, etc. That was expensive already by itself. Some months she'd be great! Some others she'd prefer to be home again not to risk it.
That was far from the vision planned so the father decided to divorce, leave and move countries.
Quite some fights happened before that, a lot of things Owen at age 5 to 6 couldn't even understand. All he knew was that he was gonna become a big brother (very excited about that), and that his dad became colder... and that mom was not always happy. And sometimes there was a lot of yelling and bad words flying around... But the sibling came! And for a little while it seemed good. Until it wasn't.
Their father left when Adrian was a few months from turning 2. Owen 6 and the mother had to do everything by herself now.

Such a sad piece and realistic as well. For a lot of men is fairly easy to just run away when things get hard because they assume the kids only belong to their mother since she's the one who birth them and they can go away and start over somewhere else with brand new kids and brand new wife, forgetting the first family ever existed. We see that a lot in my wrk place, yet, for that same reason, when both these parents get old, moms are most of the time taken care of by their adult children and grandchildren when they are too old to do stuff by themselves and fathers tend to be on their own in the public healthcare system due to their kids not wanting to take responsability for a father that abandoned them when they were the ones needing care. You reap what you sow.
