Question for the traditional artist! When you guys are using a color palette, how do you plan out where each color goes before committing?

Sometimes I add a lighter colour in the spot to overcome the fear of putting down colour. & if I don’t like it I can add a slightly darker colour or mix it w something easier

I do little tiny replicas of the drawing and put the colors on those in different spots on each sketch, then I just go from there

I normally do my rough sketch and lineart for a finished piece digitally. So I test out my colors there before I paint and then see what colors I have in say my watercolors and colored pencils that would match best.

I usually draw characters that already have a set color pallette or build images off colors, but when I'm not doing that thumbnails are a really powerful thing. if I'm ever scared or worried about colors not coming out the way i want, I'll take a picture of the lineart so if I do royally fuck up, I can always only share the lineart and I have it to draw digitally on top of

You can do small quick drawings (don’t have to be detailed) of the original and just color on them. This can help you understand which colors go together well and in what places.

Thumbnails! Sketch a few tiny versions of the piece and loosely throw colors on them. Works every time.
(Or yolo it and just layer it to death to change the colors if you don’t like them)

Personally i usually create my drawing because i had on mind specific colors so i build things around it, but when i don’t know where to place colors, i make little thumbnails on an other sheet of paper to visualise !
And if i think i messed up after putting down the colors, i trace my lineart so i can redo it right ! It almost never happened, because i have less problems with that but that’s it <3

You can always take a pic and plan the colors out digitally. Or if you don't have any digital means, you can do color swatches on scrap paper to see if the color is right. Or you could set up basic quick thumbnails on the side and test colors on that.
