I haven't had much difficulty with (those kinds) of scams as long as you're careful with having set rules and sticking to them. They're almost always super lazy and formulaic without much in their profile and ask for something like a child's/pet's portrait (ma'am when have you seen me draw a pet portrait in my LIFE) Just make sure you're using a safe payment method NEVER accept an art request that involves mailing checks. Paypal invoices is usually the safest.
