I still dont 100% know what Instagram wants to do bc I'm only hearing it second hand but..
The algorithm already promoted reels more than images, I guess they just want to weigh it even heavier.
Instagram was always a TERRIBLE app for artists and I dunno why it became so popular 🤷‍♀️
But the algorithm that promoted reels more made it absolute hell.

Personally, I recommend focusing your attention on another platform. Deviantart is still alive, and people moving back to it will reinvigorate it. Same with Tumblr, which has its problems... But it relies on sharing to help your exposure instead of an algorithm. Like, they both don't kill your quality as much as ig and are just a lot friendlier for artists than ig is now.

If you're determined to stay on ig, if you're not drawing on your phone you can make low effort art reels.
Get a phone arm, and "sketch to final" reels are super easy to make. Or record a video of you working. If your program records progress automatically (like procreate) that's easy as hell content.
I've used a free app called Youcut on Android to speed up some video taken of me working and they do okay on the platform.

Honestly, I think they're panicking that there's a new platform that's gaining traction and they're no longer number 1. And instead of doubling down on what the platform does well and realising that they've already got a niche, they're trying to cover all sections of the market....
