on top of what everyone says about being “warm and cold”, its a soft color for shadows.
Black shadows are bolder and harsher, good for more dramatic or dynamic pieces.
Normally you’d want softer colors if you’re looking to create specific moods/ paint what you’re seeing, since shadows irl aren’t really black.

i think it depends a lot. i dont think i use purple specifically. but like the sky color shows up in places the sunlight doesnt. and a lot of time i figure that must be blue ish maybe. that along with just light being one color might push us to seeing an otherwise neutral shadow as cool colored by comparison or whatever.

Bright purple looks the best with the most colors in my opinion. It compliments both warm and cool colors and can be very striking or soft looking.

There's actually a reason for it. Naturally shadows have a blue-ish or cool tint to it because of our sunlight; in a light temp scale, the sun is slightly on the warmer side, it's not perfectly white, giving the shadows we see a cooler hue (legit IRL color theory).
Artists for generations took that observation and implemented it in their works and we see it now with the more purplish shade (especially in digital art) (:

Idk why I use purple for shading or lineart. I just think it gives the shadows more depth somehow. Its also my favorite color hehe

Purple/blue just seems to fit most people's styles, maybe? Including mine, that is. But hey, it's just a theory that I made up. I could be wrong.
