Same Character in 9 Art Apps
I drew the same character in 9 apps I had on my iPad to see my favorite. My app ranking most to least favorite is in the comment so I can use the description for character lore :) Which one is your favorite drawing?His name is Sam Byrder and he was born a peasant in a mostly-medieval themed world. He may not have money but he has his wits to get him out of (or into) trouble. He can “talk his way out of anything"—or at least thats what he’ll tell anyone he’s trying to convince to go along with one of his schemes. Even though he was born in a rural village on the edge of the kingdom, his mother was quite well read. She’d originally been a scribe for a higher ranking caste member but was demoted into a life of peasantry before his birth.
Thanks to his mothers’ rather opinionated tutelage growing up, Sam is both literate and embittered towards the royal caste. However, being one of few peasants from his village who can actually read and write, he can also act a bit smug.
He thinks he has a noble code of ethics but often his actions tend to stem from a selfish or sometimes even vindictive place (especially if it concerns a person of a higher caste than him). Assuming it’s in his own best interest first, he will act mostly in favor of the fellow downtrodden. His own sense of identity rests on his impoverished roots and the vengeance he wants to carry out towards the oppressive class he believes has wronged his mother.
[Btw the drawings most ‘on model’ with how I actually see him to look are Ibis, Art Studio, Medibang (both), Affinity, and to a lesser degree Procreate. Unfortunately some are not quite how I wanted but I still enjoyed the process]Jul 16, 2024

.also, using other apps tend to be a bit of a pain for me. I once tried CSP and backed out immediately because of the UI ( dunno of i should give it a try again.) Sketchbook has been my go to because of its simplicity and I think the desktop version has the layer mask. And true, it is technically weak
but very easily customizable.

•Note: The little details and model consistency of his design is still a little bit of a WIP and the lighting/color effects altered the color scheme from app to app. I drew in CSP and Medibang (Pro version) twice. I actually redid a couple or did more than one because I wanted to be sure I was giving each app a fair shake.
My art program Ranking (could shift over time)
1. Clip studio Paint - it just does it all (it’s as full featured as the desktop version) UX is totally customizable so I have mine set up very minimally so it’s not so cluttered like the default UI can be
2. Art Studio Pro - if my CSP sub expired I’d use this one. UX is great, brushes and features are plentiful also the most customizable gestures of any app on list (three finger swipe vert/horiz, single finger double / triple tap, shortcut menu, command bar, favorites panel) I miss these gestures when I use other apps
3. Medibang Pro - why is it so fun to use?? (the UI is simple but well formatted) it does all the important things! It’s almost tied with Ibis
4. Ibis Paint - it grew on me! It is a lot like Medibang. It does have the option for more features than Medibang but only for subscribers so I didn’t have access
5. Procreate - sketching is fun, and the painting engine is growing on me with time. I found keeping to the basic brushes (round brush, syrup and technical pen, any basic pencil) and altering the global pressure settings into more of an ‘S’ curve in settings made it fit my needs better
6. Adobe Fresco - I love the live watercolor brushes! But no crop?? selection/fill tools suck, UX isn’t good imo
7. Affinity Designer* (mostly Pixel Persona) - I used the desktop version for a few years as my main program before discovering CSP so I have a bias in it’s favor but no crop on mobile??? no dual window, can’t copy or paste into/outside app? Otherwise it’s definitely very desktop-photoshop-plus-illustrator like and grows on you. I wish it was the whole software with no scale backs
8. Sketchbook App - tattoo inker brush <3 UI is nice but no clipping masks so can’t work non-destructively… easy to make custom brushes tho. It’s the weakest technically but I did enjoy drawing in it
9. Infinite Painter - good paint brushes, fill tool and eyedropper bugs (use selection & lasso fill instead), no eraser/brush pen tap gesture :( It’s fun but just doesn’t meet expectations as well as the others and I think art studio pro feels like the upgraded version of Infinite Painter in a way
