I want to make a western au for my ocs but I just realized like half of them are trans

Dude, let's make it so being cis is illegal instead. All the cis people are closeted. Rowan is the only exception because he's hot- and vegas-

•there's nothing stopping you from simply saying this is a world where being trans is accepted or even celebrated despite resembling the american west in the 19th century.
that said, i do have a trans and other lgbt characters in a red dead redemption AU myself. generally speaking it's a bit of a mixed bag for my characters. i don't play with violent bigotry involved, but my characters are more stealth about it than in other AUs. and they surround themselves with friends and family who love and accept them. so they still have a story of figuring themselves out but it doesn't center around the violent oppression they could face and more around their internal struggles.
it also means I've done a little looking into the history of things as i was curious about what realistically could be possible for my trans character in particular. i found that gender confirming treatments, whether hormones or surgery etc, seem to have been extremely rare for the time and suggested, studied, and practiced mostly in select parts of europe. mostly right at the turn of 19th to 20th centuries (1900).
but I've also read articles suggesting that in the past it was easier to 'pass' without issue and suggested it was because transgender people were far less widely known about. the cisgenders had no reason to er suspect anyone at the time cuz it never crossed their minds that anyone would even be anything but cis. i wish i could find the article for you cuz it's got personal excerpts from trans women in the 50s or such and their experiences with presenting as women in public.
again however, your creative worlds are primarily for you. you do what you want with them. and if that means making a western based world where everyone can be openly and proudly trans with no issues then that's your world. you set your own rules for your own fun!

The question is, does it have to be 100% faithful reality?
You can stay faithful to the fashion culture, the formalities and etiquette, the food traditions and regional politics without including the trans or homophobia.
But it's your choice as the writer. I just want to remind you that you do have the option of not staying true to history, especially if it's painful for you to do so. Best of luck

•Well, it could make sense to have them as their identified gender, I don’t think back there it would have been very accepted, or have them as their assigned at birth gender but characteristics showing the gender they might identify with?
