a TERRIBLE song 4 a HORRIBLE LEECH!!1!
Cover art for a song im hopefully gonna figure out how to properly finish-----personal ramble about the process)))
So....I believe there's such a thing as what i personally call a "natural" artstyle. An artstyle that is "instilled" in everyone, the one that only shows up when youve never even tried drawing once or when you actively dont premeditate in any sort of way when youre doodling. Or whatever comes effortlessly for you.
So I had my own, until at some point i obsessed and could NOT HELP but downright STEAL jhonen vasquez's. Back when i was in a bad place mentally and artistically, i used it to vent, as for me personally, his style is so dark and kind of edgy yet still silly and simple so it was the perfect comfort for me to easily draw. But since i had to vent A LOT, it ended up taking the place of my older "natural style" before i even realised it.
If you havent guessed it already, this is meant to be inspired by 'scene/emo' artstyles and aside from the fact theyve always been correlated with jhonen's, i also chose them because they were something i was ridiculously sad about having experienced way too late...much like jhonen's works. The song, among all things, was meant to make me process how bad of a relationship i used to have with nostalgia and how poorly i understood and utilized it. I decided to focus on that for the art
So i thought using and making something that is universally deemed 'nostalgic' and that overall 'belongs in the past' (even tho it really hadnt been that long if you really think about it) like the scene/emo artstyle in 2024, was gonna be the perfect middle finger to the idea that its too late to experience certain things or that you cant be nostalgic about things youve never experienced before.
Something younger me was suffering about due to not having understood as such.
So my art style comes effortlessly (as in i know the rules of it, i know the steps one by one to achieve a final look) but while its the culmination of all i learned and integrated into my art, its not my natural artstyle... after years that title still goes to jhonen's style.
All this to say, THIS WAS IMMENSELY CATHARTIC and especially EFFORTLESS TO MAKE.
Drawing with the scene/emo style which is VERY much like jhonen's and therefore i found comes just as effortlessly, as well as pretending to be younger and unable to see the mistakes i was making and just leaving them there, alllll while following the more technical rules of my art style i know by heart, to wrap it all up and consequentially make this look both cohesive and as if its...well, still something I made TODAY... it made this the EASIEST and most FUN thing that ive EVER created, geniuenly. Making this while also feeling like i was ""reclaiming"" my (stolen) natural style, except NOW that im in a good place to properly enjoy using it...was unlike anything ive ever experienced, thats for sureNov 15, 2024
