I agree, but I also understand the logic of it, and I partake in it myself.
I'm not a fan of drawing for people with lesser skill than me, or don't have a style I find appealing.
I also feel bad when I give them something with less effort to match the quality I was given, especially when I'm sure they've worked hard on it. Just seems unfair to me.

•I'm not sure if it's the case with others but if I start offering art trades, I'd give priority to mutuals since I know we'd have no issues. Then, whoever has characters I'm interested in drawing comes next - though, I'm picky so of course, I wouldn't promise to do x amount and would prefer to choose which character to draw. It wouldn't be a personal thing. I think it would be a lot harder too if I haven't talked to the other person before (that's why I haven't replied to a post about art trades yet). Your thoughts are valid and I guess all I can say is if you are (or to whom this may apply) looking for trades, keep reaching out and offer them in your own posts - whoever really wants to see their character in your style will be rushing to grab your attention. At least, that's how I hope it'll be
