I had to see someone refer to queer ppl over 30 as "queer elders" and I'm like.
What.
Why.
Why would you do thatDec 31, 2022

Well, most of the queer people who actually would’ve lived to be old &/or elderly were killed via hate crimes, suicide, & untreated disease such as AIDS.
That & people suck at knowing what “old” or “elder” means when applied to our own species?
+ Elder just seems to mean “of a greater age,” & if most queer people know are under 30 years old because the majority of the older ones died before getting to become old or died while being older, then calling the queer people over 30 “elders” may sort of actually make sense?
I agree with you though, it’s definitely weird & I personally think elder would apply to anyone 60+.

General internet brain worms of thinking anyone 30 is OLD. when in reality, it's anywhere from 1/2 to a 1/3 of someone's total life. Sure, 30 seems old when you're 15 (it's literally double your life so far!) But in the grand scheme of things.... It's not. If anything, it's where your life kinda starts being settled into Adulthood, rather than the weird transition period of your 20s
.
I really need teenagers to stop acting like 30 is old, and once you hit 30 your life is over. Trust me, none of that is true. Stop making people dread getting older by calling anything without a -teen on the end Old!! You're oldER, yes. But not Old
.
And specifically with the LGBT community - i always thought elder referred to someone who LIVED through the aids crisis as a member of the community? We're talking people in their 50s and older, who have a good 3-4 decades of life IN the community. Not someone whose had like... 15 years in it

•"Queer elders" sounds epic but 30 year old people are way too young for that title lmao.
I remember seeing an old lady (like at least 65+) at a mall and she had a bag with pride flag colors. THAT was a queer elder (or maybe she was an ally or just really like rainbows lol)

•I mean I guess our community’s standards for “elders” are a lot lower because a lot of the older generations of queer people were literally wiped out, but it might also be to contrast the phrase “baby gays” which more refers to people who only just discovered they’re queer or came out? So anyone who has been living openly queer for a while is considered more experienced and elder? But maybe it’s also just that some young people have absolutely no concept of age.
