Self Portrait With Mask

If you haven’t noticed I’ve got a bit of a fire motif going on. There are a few reasons for this. First, I tend to associate fire with confidence and passion like when someone says the have a fire burning in them to do something. I started using this theme attached to myself when I was testing for my Black Belt about 4 or 5 years ago. I’m not a very loud person so I was trying to attach more energy to myself to make up for that. I also just have a lot of association with fire and storytelling, and storytelling it the main thing I want to do in the future. There’s also an interesting duality that exists when you mix witches and fire given the history that comes from witch trials.

For the actual piece, I decided to try leaning into the ember part with the outfit. I also added a mask to this one, some what plague doctor like, but instead of a crow feel I went with a medieval phoenix, because fire.

And I guess, retroactively, new beginnings because I want to start doing more stuff and putting more stuff out into the world.

There’s also a secret eyeball in the background, because I like drawing eyes.May 8, 2021
