Revisiting childhood movies: Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
"Hee...hee?"
This was a weird and padded out movie, and I didn't like it. One thing that was so great about the original adaptation was its simplicity. Sure, it wasn't an entirely faithful adaptation and Roald Dahl famously hated it as a result, but it had plenty of charm and childhood wonder. Because this is a Tim Burton joint, things have gotta get weird and quirky, and that charm is just not there as a result.
Xtra Notes:
-How It's Made: Wonka Edition
-You know, if there's one thing I'll give to this one, it's that the performances(besides the pink sheep in the room that we'll get to eventually)are overall pretty good. The main kids are ultimately the highlight: The Good Doctor before he got his medical license, the girl from Race to Witch Mountain, Louis from Meet the Robinsons, the resident glutton, and spoiled British girl.
-Was this entire sequence of the Chocolate Factory's history in the book too? Cuz if so, then it's no wonder why the original adaptation cut it out.
-That's a rather futuristic looking Japanese candy shop for 2005.
-I can't believe that the machines took over the toothpaste business at the turn of the decade, truly ahead of its time.
-Yo, is Violet's mom prime Karen material or what?
-Those puppets were already bad enough, but set them on fire and you have prime sleep paralysis visions material.
-Oh snap, it's Michael Jackson in his wildest film role in his career! Wait, that's Johnny Depp? Sure didn't seem like it.
-And herein lies the problem with this adaptation: the unnecessary flashbacks that happen when someone's talking about their backstory, whether it's about how Wonka hired the Oompa Loompas and another thing that we'll get to eventually.
-The Oompa Loompas sync together so well that one can't even tell that Deep Roy performed each of them individually.
-Can't go wrong with Danny Elfman original songs.
-I was expecting nightmare fuel on the boat ride and instead got a theme park attraction with a dash of childhood trauma on the side. Meh.
-Speaking of childhood trauma, we've got Wonka's childhood trauma that definitely wasn't in the book: his dentist father hated everything sweet. It's the "my dad left me" meme taken to the extreme.
-CGI bloated Violet is honestly terrifying.
-Man, Veruca's gonna be a big smelly rodent-infested willy by the time she gets back to England.
-Haha, Oprah and the Macarena...wait, that's not 2005.
-This remaster of 2001: A Space Odyssey is the best yet, they replaced the tall futuristic rectangle with a Wonka bar!
-And so we see the outcome of the other naughty children: Augustus is still covered in chocolate, Violet became a superhero known as "Elastic Gymnastics Woman", Veruca's covered in trash, and Mike is now Flat Stanley. Truly, a fate worse than the unknown fates of the kids in the original adaptation.
-"Oh no, a gray strand of hair! That means I'm getting old! Oh, the humanity!"
-See, dentist dad? One can eat candy and still brush their teeth well enough to not get cavities.
-And so it ends with the Buckets' house being transferred to a place that's not so miserable, and Wonka truly understanding the meaning of family. D'awwww.
-WB's doing another movie in this series, what is it gonna be about? Who knows!Jan 4, 2022
