What is the difference between portrait, illustration and character art? If I can see a lot of drawings fall in a grey area.

Portrait is head or a bust and emphasize more on the face, a illustration is more story based and usually has background so the character sits in a world, and character art is about the character - like character sheets or concept art for characters. The focus is on the characters. Which can really easy combine with the portrait but the portrait can be of real people and character art is about fictional character and personas if I not mistaken.

Well portrait its when you paint draw a head or a bust, character art it's when you a draw an oc an illustration it's when you do a drawing with background or whatever doesn't fit in the other category's

Well, portrait is just the head until shoulders, illustration contains background characters nature , and character art is mainly oc’s or just a study of a person. I saw that if you use the hashtag “question” it will appear as one
