I just realized the stuff I write may not necessarily be what everybody else would like; and in terms of selling books, I would need to appeal to others and not just write things that only feel exciting to (probably only) me... So would you read this summary and tell me if it sounds interesting or sucks to you? Because I for one ended up hating the characters; but that could mean someone else would appreciate them:
Story begins with a alien invasion but doesn't reveal exactly what happened: just mankind was left hurt by the experience and not pulled law enforcement, military/navy into the same force. Along with hiring just about anybody to fill these roles, though with no real training. Which hints at how crippled society was after the invasion...
The meat of the story begins off on a farm where the MC emo kid is working, but is arrested by other teens in a crazed frenzy and taken to the police station. There he finds the arrest was a mistake, but instead of letting him go home they want to cover it up by offering him a job there/A way to continuously make money just for showing up at the office. The emo doesn't want to as his views are nearly nihilistic and he wants to reveal what happened and have them suffer, but a plea from another officer; who's very aware of their mistake, truthfully explains the force is understaffed and is more sympathetic to the situation, which changes the emo's mind.
After receiving a high-tech badge: the emo is set in the same office with the teen that arrested him. The arresting officer is annoyed a decision he made turned out giving someone a job, but the others in that squad were neutral to actually friendly-ish? The story goes over several investigations which reveals the state of the futuristic world and main characters' backstories. During this the emo's viewpoint barely changes from nihilistic to slightly positive due to at least having two or three good friends on the force, but the squad later learn that the sympathetic officer (from before) was killed in the line of duty. Which started to trigger the emo's viewpoint to regress ...... but the actual leader of that squad appears to check on her team before going back on a private investigation. But not before she tries training the Emo herself; sensing he had more potential than just being a errand boy to her subordinates. But the aliens return and she doesn't get to finish
All officers all over Earth are the first line of defense and have the weaponry to fight the things. But the aliens started beaming humans up instead of only fighting back, that's when the emo finds he's been chosen among few others to go back to their planet. Earth is endangered and the aliens want to preserve parts of each life from it, but only people and creatures who they deemed worthy. All he had to do is wait until his body was converted by the bioship and not freak out like many of the chosen do. So the emo waits, and even (safely) launches his friends out of the ship (as opposed to killing them with his new power) so they wouldn't convince him to go back. But after he's absorbed partially, the leader makes it inside and finds him steeped in the ship's blood. She tries convincing him to escape with her; but after learning exactly HOW dark his view is: instead desperately convinces him that he's important to Earth/to other human beings and that he should at very least give her the chance to show him. The Emo tries to leave but the aliens get angry and explains he's too far in, they'll have to kill him now if he tries to leave; but the emo uses his increased powers to eject all humans back to Earth's surface then tries to self destruct the ship before he leaves.. The aliens counter by ending their invasion quickly snatching everybody still onboard any ship into space....
The story ends with no one really remembering him or the others and getting on with their lives: EXCEPT the Squad leader who went through the trouble of recovering badges from people on her team of those who were taken away or killed...including the emo's..which she turned into a earrings
So I apologize for the wall of text: what do you think? Of course A lot can be altered if it's anything sounds messed up. But are you at all interested in the idea? Feb 5, 2023

I agree with nerv in that the story seems a bit all over the place, a farm emo gets wrongly arrested and then offered a job with the cops to fight an alien invasion, but then the aliens abduct him and give him powers? I think there's a lot of potential, and I do think it's an interesting idea, but at the same time, I think the lines between plot points need to be interconnected more cohesively.
Having a nihilist main character might be somewhat of a thin line depending on how you portray him; the reader needs to connect and root for the mc, and if the character is just super bitter and negative all the time, it becomes tiring to read. At some point, a lot of people might end up rooting against him or just giving up on the story entirely. Having him slowly become more positive through interacting with others is a good idea, but if he reverts to how he was after the woman's death, it would also revert all the goodwill that the character arc created between the Mc and the reader. People want to see characters improve and grow, especially the main characters. Having the mc struggle between his nihilism and the positive effect the woman had on him before her death could create an interesting internal conflict that would engage the reader and build that connection as well as some sympathy for him.
But overall, this is a good concept!! I don't really read sci-fi myself so I can't comment on that area, but despite the scattered ideas in this I can see the basic plot which is a great start!

•It's cool to have a nihilistic main character, but the story seems all over the place. I didn't get much the link between law enforcement and the aliens.

•For those who skimmed through:
Basically a almost nihilist kid goes on investigations with a: absolute jerk, neat freak, A actually neutral person and a "cool guy". The Kid is mostly used as a lightning rod since he shows no real reactions in public. But he starts becoming more friendly to a very few people, until the woman who coaxed him to join the force is murdered.
It gets worse when the aliens offers him a way out; but his boss convinces him not to give up on others. Though they take him away before he can get free...
