His birthday was a couple days ago (7/7) but I finally had time to sit down and finish this piece finally.
The grey background was the easiest to paint in this new book but the blue fought me a little. Also the mix of grey for his hair @.@ but the rest was really nice.
I was indecisive about having Cap make eye-contact, reading the book, or having his eyes closed. Since the themes are for a date with one of the boys, I had Cap reading together with the viewer. Eyes down reading is “being in the moment and enjoying it together”, while eyes shut is more serene but to keep parity with the rest of the paintings so far, I had him have eye-contact. Cap’s a widower and still holds a torch for his late wife, so I wasn’t sure if I wanted a more romantic connection but to be honest, it still reads as a nice, content moment without too much intimacy. What a hard balance.
I was originally going to draw him playing chess but I did a chess piece last year so I needed a little more variety. Who knows what next year will bring? XD also designing an appropriate spring outfit for the boys has been really challenging but hopefully I can make cute ones XDJul 9, 2026
