its all springs! 
Pushing down on the reload/eraser compresses a spring that wraps around the mechanisms, and pushes this little... split feed through a ring in the tip? As it pushes thru the ring it pulls the split apart and allows the lead to go forward/out thr tip. Then the spring pushes back on that button and pulls the split back together- locking the lead in place.
There are some other transfers of the click power (like in thr mechanical pencils with the button on the side) but the basic system is the same. If you unscrew the tip-cap you can see it in action!
