My friend commissioned me to draw a scene from the larger narrative that Ares is part of.
Before he got yeeted, he was part of an adventuring party that's trying to prevent the end of the world! They're all in the capital trying to escape a siege and had the unfortunate experience of watching a friend get eaten by a dragon right in front of them... So... That's childhood trauma right there.
