I learned something new last week in art class.

Apparently listening to music is bad when you're trying to draw.

The reason being is that it ruins your concentration. And before you say "but I concentrate better with music" what I mean is that you're not giving your full attention to the drawing you're doing.
When you're bopping your head, tapping your finger, etc. half of your attention is divided to listening and reacting when really you need to give 100% to drawing.

I don't particularly agree with this because I loop my music. Yes I'll sing, nod my head, all that jazz for the first couple of runs but after that I calm down and it becomes background noise. However, I know that people can't stand listening to one song for hours on end so here's a tip my instructor told me:
Find music that's generally mellow, something that'll practically blend in to the background (like classical music). If you're reacting to the music it's a sure sign to find another song.
I've also heard that listening to the radio works too so long as it's not broadcasting music.

I follow that advice and also don't. I usually listen to a couple songs on my playlist while doing a study or practicing anatomy doodles but turn it off bc I don't really like to listen to my songs on repeat. After a while one or two songs are in my head and I kind of use it as inspiration for my next project or to doodle out an idea.
This makes sense for me in the beginning stages! I can't listen to music when I'm making early design decisions, but once I've mostly figured that out and am just painting, I can jam away. Especially for people with attention issues like myself, it's like I need to occupy the part of my brain that says "Let's not do this right now!" with music, so that I can draw with the rest of my brain. Same goes when I listen to lectures. If I doodle and occupy the part of my brain that doesn't want to be there, I can sit and listen intently to the lecture with the rest of my brain.
I know that music takes up a part of my attention, that's why I automatically find myself turning it off if I get to a tricky part of the drawing.
But on the other hand it boosts the time I can draw at once and makes the whole process more fun. So I feel like it's also about knowing when it's a good idea to put some music one.
Like when the thing you are drawing is very monotonous and mindless.
Example: that one time I was drawing grass for two hours.
I'm usually more focused when I’m not listening to music. But depending on my mood I do have stuff running in the background. Sometimes music fitting to the ambiance I want the picture to have, just generally uplifting music and such but yeah background noise. Also people talking about drawing, historical sowing or stories are nice to keep motivated and have some background noise.
From my experience, listening to music doesn't really make a difference. It makes sense not listening to music when doing things like maths or writing bc you need to work things out but for art it doesn't make a difference to my thought process. And also I used music at school bc my class was noisy.
