When you pick a name for your ocs do you put meaning behind it? Or do you just pick something and say, “that sounds about right.”

I’m probably the second 🙃

I always put a lot of thought into them, like looking up a name that means or reveals something about them or references a person that has something to do with their creation or something linked to their cultural background. But there are times when I just give them dumb names BUT I look them up and it turns out those names actually fit them aksvakb
Both tbh, but I base their names around the regions and elements they were born and/or raised in
I named my oc banana chip because she reminded me of banana chips.
I did not expect this many people to reply, but y’all got some good naming skills! 💖
Both but sometimes I'm not check the meaning correctly like

" Sol" when i search up their meaning it say Souls.

Next one of the people on Discord say to me that i was wrong and correct me by saying "it's nice that have a meaning to the name

but actually the real meaning is Sun

I so that happened..
both tbh
The regions in my story are roughly inspired by real world cultures, so for side characters I randomly generate region-specific names, and then for main characters I’ll actually scroll through the meanings and pick ones I like :)
Sometimes. For example, Roanigan’s brother, Winter was born on a snow storm on the first day of winter
Both
Both. If they have a name from a particular culture I will general go with a meaning because I have to look it up anyway other times I just think of it randomally. Sometimes it's both. Riaj'nud's last name Dunjear was created by me as was the name of the god Dunjoour but the similarity was on purpose.
I usually do the first option considering a lot of my ocs are based on myths and legends. But one time i made a new antagonist and i was thinking of a name for him but all i could think of is just that one devil may cry meme that goes "¡JAJAJAJA Dante tu Novia esta bien loca!, ¿Jugamos al 8-ball?" So i named him Dante after that 🙃
I'm the second. I just kinda string together syllables and go "that sounds okay". I've never really had a set naming convention, and all my characters are from all over a high fantasy world, so if I come up with rules, I gotta have hundreds of them....
Some have real world names with a fantasy twist to it (but basically get shortened to the normal one), others came in randomly, some came from name generators.
..... It's not a good naming system and I don't recommend it. It basically means I can't seem to come up with names reliably 😣. Hence why one character has lacked a name for like, a decade......
It depends. For Zachir, I was feeling either Louis or Zach but a friend already has a Luis and I didn't want to seem like I copied them. But Zach didn't seem fantasy-ish enough so my friend suggested Zachir and I went with it.
Kovari's name literally came into my mind while I was brushing my teeth one night and I ran to my room to write it down before I could forget.
I followed the creator of the show She-Ra on Twitter and she was fostering kittens. One of them was named Sorsha and I really liked that name, so I gave it to my oc. It means "the shining one", so when I made her brother I named him Lucius, also something light-related, so they'd be the light siblings
the majority of my characters are named the way that they are literally just bc it made me laugh
Every name I give my characters has a good level of research put into it. It makes me feel clever
I just name that sounds fun! (or it has joke in it...) 😅
To be fair, I try my best to find a name that can fit my character’s personality, but in the end I still pick the most random name that comes to mind. I’m quite an impatient folk so I suppose it makes sense, but making a list of possible names can usually help deciding onto your favorite one!
OK HERE'S THE KICKER
I for no reason at all, have an ability to give my oc's names/design and lore deeper meaning that correctly intertwine these three aspects and give them deeper meaning and I won't even know about it until like months later I'll be doing some proper research for lore and then discover that I actually already did it subconsciously

. _. I cannot stress enough how many times this happened and it surprises me every time
Hmm I used to look at meanings behind them but now I just choose a name that just sounds right and suits them.
definitely a mix of both
like my main character Memphis used to have a meaningful name but it didn’t fit him

Memphis fit and sounded more badass, so that’s what I went with lmao
For most I try to think of names o think sound cool but I think generally I try to pick a name based on wherever that oc comes from or the culture that inspires that oc.
a mix of both i think
