Is anyone currently working as a graphic novel artist (mangaka, etc.) for a living, and what's your advice for novice who aspires to work in that field?

I'm currently still completing my double degree in games and animation, but I'm stuck in a dilemma because there are a few areas that I want to branch out upon graduation; the animation industry, gaming studio, or become a full time graphic novel artist. I wonder if it would be possible to work in the gaming studio while making manga as a side job?

Manga is my side gig (for what it's worth, I'm still working on actually getting something together worth releasing), I'm a currently a student as my day job! 😝 BUT. I will be a zoologist/teacher when I graduate and plan to keep working on my manga, and have a potential plan to shift to manga full time if I start making enough money with it, which doesn't feel very likely to me but still...

I will say that whether you can make manga/comics your side job heavily depends on whether you are willing to publish indie. Indie is what I recommend for side jobs especially if you want to work on a long-form story. If you do publisher, you'll have lots of deadlines and stuff if you try for a series of books. I feel like a publisher would expect you to treat it as a full time job. Indie is more welcoming to all speeds.

For indie publishing, the best platform is currently GlobalComix. They give you the best pay rates and have the most variety in publishing formats compared to Webtoon and Tapas. You can also look into I think Comicfire?? Idr if that's what it is called. But I am going to use GlobalComix when I publish.
