@monki_ink's post on Artfol
Would anyone happen to have an understanding of what NFT art is? I’ve been doing some research and I still don’t understand it. And whenever I look it up online it’s usually downgraded character art or abstract digital illustrations.
My parents keep nagging me to do it and it’s getting on my nerves. I don’t even draw digitally.

@arancia @cartooncreaturelover @gikairan @goofballpaul @moonshinegardens @wilt_edpetals , thank to everyone for your insight, understanding, and precaution of pursuing NFT’s. I never knew or considered how harmful they could be for the environment and I was always confused how the whole bloody etherium worked, needless to say, your advice and knowledge has provided me with clarification and reassurance not to pursue NFT’s.
Thank you my dudes.

Please don’t make any NFTs!!!!
They’re super bad for the environment & their (supposed) value is easily made into nothingness! They kinda encourage art theft too! So not good all around!

Minus the terrible electricity wastage needed to mint an nft on the blockchains that are normally used for it (e.g. etherium)
It's dumb. Absolutely stupid.
Basically, it's a special bitcoin token that leads to a URL. That URL links to an artwork, for as long as the site that hosts the URL exists.
It's basically proof of "ownership" of.... A PNG file. Except it gives the owner no real rights over the image. Just.. bragging rights to say they have it. You can't reproduce an image, nor own it's copyright. It's literally paying money to say "dibs" on an image. And if the website hosting your Nft goes down, you've got a token that points to nothing
Honestly, I can't understand why people are buying these. I understand why artists jumped on it, but this isn't like physical art. You're buying something you can't USE. At least if I brought a piece of artwork from a gallery, I'd have the actual artwork?
Thing is, the tech could have some interesting uses. Namely in gaming. But digital art isn't one of those uses, imo. And for while it uses energy intensive blockchains like etherium, you should stay WELL away from it.
I also think the bubble might have burst a little for these? There's definitely a lot less talk about buying NFT art than there used to be.

Oh god please don’t do NFTs, I’m going to start with the arguments most likely to convince your parents:
FIRST: It’s a highly volatile market that you have to pay a lot to get into but is EXTREMELY unlikely to give you anything in return, unless you are super famous and can get speculators interested.
It is not a viable business venture to risk taking part in, you will most likely lose money minting NFTs and never make it back.
SECOND: Even if you managed to start off well, the NFT market could crash at any time and not recuperate, the bubble has already burst once and has only partially recuperated ever since, most people trading NFTs are in it just for the money, not because they genuinely want the art, NFTs only have value because people speculate with them, if a maximum is reached and people stop speculating the market crashes, violently.
Now, other arguments appealing to your morality instead of your parents.
NFTs are bought with cryptocurrencies, the cryptocurrency industry consumes a brutal ammount of electricity and inflates graphics card demand, this is terrible for the environment (coal and gas plants producing energy, mining the materials to produce more graphics cards)
Thus, the NFT is also responsible for terribly high CO2 emissions. To create nothing of value, by the way, because the artwork itself is not the NFT, the NFT is just a text file that REFERS to that artwork, it’s like a “I SAW IT FIRST, DIBS” certificate that people buy and sell, but has no real value, it has no use, it does not give you ownership or rights over the artwork, it has no use other than being speculated with, for the dumbest bragging rights conceivable.

DO NOT participate in nfts! They are bad for the environment. What it is is art that is “coded” in a unique way that makes it one of a kind. But in order to give it that “code,” it needs lots of computers to host the servers. This takes a toll on the environment.
This is my really small understanding on NFTS cause I’m not super smart, but that’s what I get
