NesmeshnoDTIYS (DTIYS Entry)
I’ve just finished another digital art piece, and once again, it’s an entry for a draw-this-in-your-style challenge. This one was hosted by Nesmeshno a few months ago, and I couldn’t resist joining in. The challenge was to reimagine this adorable little character, a cheerful young girl, and I really wanted to capture her playful spirit and vibrant personality.The character is a delightful portrayal of childhood joy and innocence. She’s got these big, round eyes filled with excitement, almost like she’s living in a world where everything is fascinating and every little thing is a reason to smile. Her auburn hair is styled in two cute, bouncy buns, with a few strands escaping to give her that effortless, carefree look. I wanted to make her expression as lively as possible, so I gave her a wide smile, almost as if she’s about to burst out laughing, and a pair of little yellow smiley stickers on her cheeks. She’s pointing at the stickers with both hands, emphasising her cheerful expression in such a fun, childlike way.
She’s dressed in a bright orange pair of overalls, the kind that look soft and roomy, perfect for a child always on the move. I added a little rainbow patch on the pocket, a detail that felt right for her colourful personality. Underneath, she’s wearing a purple T-shirt, which complements the warm tones of her overalls nicely. It’s a simple outfit, but it has that cosy, playful feel that suits her character perfectly. I also rolled up the cuffs on her overalls a bit to show off her chunky, mismatched sneakers—one pink and one white with pink laces. It’s such a small detail, but it adds to her charm, giving her that slightly mismatched, unselfconscious style that children often have.
Working on this piece made me realise how much I want to dive deeper into children’s illustration. There’s something so wonderful about capturing that sense of childhood wonder—the way everything feels fresh and exciting, and even the smallest things can spark pure joy. I find it inspiring, that simple happiness children have, and it’s something I want to bring out more in my artwork. Creating illustrations that speak to that innocent, joyful side of life feels incredibly rewarding, and I hope I managed to capture even a small piece of that in this drawing.
Participating in these draw-this-in-your-style challenges always pushes me to experiment and learn, and with each piece, I feel like I’m growing a little closer to the kind of illustrator I aspire to be. This one was especially meaningful, as it reminded me of how much I love exploring that magical world of childhood through art.Oct 28, 2024
