What do I do when I feel low and negative thoughts bug me when I try to sleep?

Lately I’ve been feeling like a failure and comparing my life to others.

Tbh I have a little song that I sing to myself whenever I'm thinking thoughts I don't want to think (That's the no-no thought / don't think the no-no thought x3) and then I forcefully think abt something else. So I'll say something along the lines of - I'm allowed to feel xyz and think about abc but I don't want to right now so instead I'm going to think about fgh. And then really really focus on the other thing and reprimand your brain when it tries to switch.
I would sometimes get up and play a game to toss my monkey brain a rubic's cube to solve instead of it using the reserves of creativity to come up with catastrophic scenarios about my life.

Sometimes I'd sit down with a blank paper and just draw draw draw or write write write and then notice I don't have very many thoughts at all, and I'm just tired.

If I didn't get up, I could still count down ten good things that either happened that day, or that I'm lucky to have in my life, or honestly looking forward to.

When I had depression ten felt like too big of a number but the good things are still there even if my emotions about them don't match and I noticed that when I repeated this, I could always consistently come up with ten things, big or small, no matter how I felt.

It became impossible to rationally argue that the world is bleak and has always been bleak and will continue to be bleak.

Or if the thoughts cling to self-image or self-worth and aim to sabotage and darken that, I could recognize and approach that, or recognize at a glance what a mess that thought was and leave it for something worth the attention.

Change happened slowly, over time. I noticed many times that I still had the thoughts but I had stopped believing them and learned to notice and influence what I'm focusing on.

I didn't simply think my way out of depression but I had help and I changed things about my life and working environment, too, and I keep my physical surroundings mainly organized because living in a mess makes me feel like a mess.

Here's some advice that I got from somewhere on tumblr: Never trust any thoughts about you, or your life after 9PM. Don't. You start thinking of something negative at a late hour, then it's time to distract yourself hard or to go to bed.
Personally I try to distract myself by thinking of story’s with my ocs. Gives myself something else to think about.
I honestly can understand, I’ve been struggling with very similar feelings. Sadly our brains are are worst enemies.
