The Moonlight TreaderStanding atop their 3m tall in average, these solitary creatures roam the plains in search for their food. The slate on their head, other than for seduction purposes in their mating season, helps them defend themselves against the imprudent enough predators that would think to attack them, but it also serves as a sort of photovoltaic panel. Made from a mix of keratin, ferrous minerals, and cells similar to those in our own eyes, this slate absorbs heat and light to redistribute it to the body when necessary. Their neck is fitted with a bioluminescent pouch that allows them to better navigate the monotone grounds of the plains. The colour and size of the pouch varies from individual to individual, but as the mating season approaches it turns a pale blue. During this season, each individual migrates to the Great Lakes to reproduce. The display of thousands of individuals joining together in the middle of the night is quite the show, and locals have as a tradition to organise great wakes during the « Fallen Stars » night (named because of the lights these creatures emit) where they try to tame some of these Moonlight Treaders, and pay respect to the elders amounts these beasts, which are said to be older than most cities in this region, and can be taller than houses. Folk legends say it is an Elder Moonlight Treader, taller than two castles, that would have helped the founders of this city, by digging rivers and shining its light through the night. They are considered as protectors and a sign of good omen when met in the wilderness.May 13, 2021
